Like She Owns The Place by Cara Alwill Leyba is the first of a few books I plan to share this month. So many good titles were released recently that I couldn’t pick just one!
Today’s selection was without question on the top of my list. I have had the pleasure of reading the works of this author for a few years. This is, in fact, the 7th book in her collection of writings…and one of my favorites.
Let me cut to the chase with this. Cara is a kick ass writer. She has the ability to be vulnerable, honest, strong and confident all at the same time. When you read her books, it is hard not to feel like she is speaking directly to you. You will find yourself shaking your head in agreement, you will have moments when you close the book to just sit deep in thought and reflect on her words. You will feel like you are sitting beside a good friend who is sharing her personal journey in order to make your life better. That’s what I like most. Cara provides examples of her own struggles, how she changed her mindset, developed personal affirmations and took action.
You should never apologize for chasing the things you love.

The book is well organized into eight main chapters. The chapters begin with a personal story that foreshadows the discussion ahead. Likewise, each chapter ends with reflections and power mantras to help the discussed ideas sink in. It is easy to stop and start within the book. I read it once all the way through, then returned to previous chapters to complete the exercises.
I particularly enjoyed Chapter Three – I’m Not Sorry. This is a lesson in releasing guilt, knowing your self worth, and confidently asserting yourself. This is a great chapter. Cara encourages the reader to replace the S-word with new phrases that are unapologetic and guilt free! I don’t know about you, but there are times when I struggle to keep up with email. Thanks to Cara, I have changed my response from “Sorry for my delay” to “Thanks for your patience”!! I love how Cara has incorporated compelling and actionable self study into each section. In this particular chapter, the exercises help you create an affirmation for letting go of guilt and creating a list of personal values.
With Like She Owns The Place you won’t just be chasing the things you love. It will also leave you striving for excellence and achieving success your way and on your own terms. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this book and others you recommend for my collection!
Best,
Donna
