10 Halloween Movies – Thrills, Chills, and Giggles

Tomorrow is Friday night. We have only 2 weekends left before Halloween. Have you had a good scare lately?

Halloween themed movies can be spooky, some can be scary and others are just darn right silly. October just doesn’t seem like Halloween unless I have made my way through as many favorites as possible.

I hope my list inspires you to welcome All Hallows Eve with a few thrills, chills and giggles. Make some popcorn and don’t forget a blanket to hide under during the really scary parts!

Enjoy These Must Watch Movies

1. Young Frankenstein (1974)  This year it seems appropriate to start my list with a tribute to the great Gene Wilder “Abby Who?”…..Abby Normal. See? You’re smiling, aren’t you…

2. Poltergeist (1982) “They’re Heeeeere…….” I think this was the first movie where I realized clowns are creepy.

3. The Quiet Place (2018) Ok, I know this isn’t a classic “yet”. It is the first of two recent films that made my list. There are so many scary and cringe worthy scenes that my heart was racing the entire 90 minutes! Up the scare factor by watching it on a dark, windy night.

4. The Blair Witch Project (1999) The estimated budget for this is reported to have been $22,000….yet it grossed over $240 million. Armed with home video cameras, the three actors were only given a 35-page outline of the plot. The movie was largely improvised. My kids have never been interested in this one. “They used video cameras, Mom. No special effects. What is scary about that?”  They have no idea what they are missing.

5. Halloween (1978) I was a teenager the first time I saw this and it scared the shit out of me. Although not quite the same effect anymore, it doesn’t feel like Halloween without hearing that classic piano theme song. It is one of those rhythms that you recognize immediately.

6. The Corpse Bride (2005) The characters may look spooky, but this is a sweet fairy tale story. If you are like me, you will oddly find yourself rooting for the corpse bride, Emily, to find peace. In the end you have characters who choose to sacrifice their own happiness for someone else.

7. IT (2017) Poltergeist may have been the first movie to show me a creepy clown, but Pennywise takes it to a whole new level. This remake was too good not to make my top 10 this year. I have already watched it twice.

8. Dracula (1931) Every year I look forward to MeTv nights with Svengoolie. October often means Saturday night features will be the classics. Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Frankenstein from the same year (1931), The Wolf Man, The Black Cat…and this list goes on. By far, my favorite remains Dracula.

9. Coraline (2009) Ok, am I the only one that initially watched this without realizing it was not your typical kids movie?

10. Ghostbusters (1984) The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and getting slimed. Need I say more?

Bonus: For a bit of nostalgia, make time to settle in for a Halloween classic that never fails to transport you back in time. Whether your own childhood or a that of your kids, this short 25 min movie will warm your heart. The star character can be found hidden in the photo above. Need a hint?

“This is the time of year to write to the Great Pumpkin. On Halloween Night, the Great Pumpkin rises out of his pumpkin patch and flies through the air with his bag of toys for all the children!”

Enjoy this season of pumpkin spice everything, taffy apples, and halloween thrillers.

Best,

Donna
